Walking Holidays in the UK
Walking is good for you - health experts tell us that walking helps to boost the metabolism, eases stress and improves sleep. Power walking is almost as beneficial as jogging for exercise purposes and it places less strain on your joints. A short walk in the middle of the working day is refreshing and even a 10-minute stroll will help avoid the afternoon energy slump.
If you've got a few days to spare, why not spend them walking along some of the 140,000+ miles of public footways in England and Wales or on the network of paths in Scotland? A walking holiday in the UK, combined with using public transport, is a really green option when deciding how to make the most of your precious leisure time.
With more than 1,500 miles of waterside routes available, walking along canal towpaths and beside rivers is a great choice for your UK holiday. There are plenty of places to get a drink or a meal, as well as cosy and romantic hotels and inns for overnight stops. There are travel companies that can arrange your accommodation along your route and carry your luggage between hotels for you, while you enjoy your riverside stroll.
If it's your first time on a walking holiday, don't overdo it. Go for a few practice walks beforehand, then you can build up to more challenging distances. Do wear suitable clothing and footwear, use sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Get the best out of your holiday by good planning and being aware of your personal comfort and safety.
